The Anchorage Condominiums sit right next to the St. Thomas Yacht
Club at Cowpet Bay, which makes it a popular spot for folks with a
nautical inclination to hang their hats when the club puts on its annual
Rolex Regatta on Easter weekend. About 100 boats converge on the small
bay for three days of racing, partying and general good times. But book in advance. The 78 two and three-bedroom units fill up fast for this event.
Otherwise, Anchorage Condominiums is a pretty quiet place. It has
a fair number of full-time residents, which gives you a chance to meet
the locals as they go about their daily life. It attracts lots of
families who fit in nicely with the residential ambience.
The units in the three-story buildings are tropical modern, with
either carpet, ceramic or clay tile floors, rattan furniture and tropical
accents that reflect the owners' tastes. All have air-conditioning and ceiling fans. Only about half the units have views. If you want to see sailboats bobbing in the harbor, pick a room closer to the beach or on the upper floors.
You'll spend your days relaxing on your balcony or patio, playing
a bit of tennis on the two lighted courts, working out in the small
fitness center, or splashing at the pool or the beach.
While you can whip up gourmet meals in the fully-equipped kitchen
- it has a microwave and a dishwasher as well as the usual appliances,
you might enjoy continental fare at the Jerry's Beachfront Restaurant
located at the Anchorage. It's open for lunch and dinner during the
winter, and lunch only in the summer.
However, your East End location makes it easy to get out and about for meals if you have a car. Restaurants, neighborhood-type grocery shopping and the ferry to St. John and its V.I. National Park are about two miles away at Red Hook, but it's a bit to far to walk, especially at night. You can rent a car right at the Anchorage.
A few miles further will put you at large grocery stores and a
Kmart, the best place to stock up on your duty-free liquor and
inexpensive souvenirs.
Another 20 minutes - 10 if there's no traffic - in the car will
put you in downtown Charlotte Amalie, a historic city where the main
activity consists of wandering from store to store in search of whatever
strikes your fancy.
